OPEN AUDITIONS / TRY OUTS
SSC PLAYHOUSE will hold auditions for the musical comedy, ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, a simply silly saucy musical spoof of the fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea." Come prepared to sing a 2-minute song of your choice (no accompaniment needed), to move, to dance and to improvise. Audition times vary, so be prepared to wait a bit or to be called back. There are 11 luscious roles in the 25 to 30-member cast. SSC's Annual Jazz Festival
Over 25 high school and junior high bands from the Chicago area perform at this year's festival. Guest artists and clinicians are Steve Houghton, drums and flutist Nicole Mitchell. The guest artist concert begins on the 21st at 5:00 PM featuring the SSC Jazz Ensemble and SSC Jazz Orchestra. For more information, call Andy Hoefle at 708-596-2000, ext. 2299. SSC's Choir Day
Area high schools join together for a day of song. SSC faculty member Victoria Lowczyk sings, and well-known composer and conductor Keith Hampton serves as principal adjudicator. Piano Recital / Lecture by Mark Valenti. Valenti has performed in recital live on WFMT classical radio. He has also done extensive work in the Jazz field including performances with Gregory Hines, Frank Foster and Al Grey and has appeared on television with Joe Sudler's Swing Machine and singer/actor Christopher Durham. No charge for admission.

In this hilarious tweaking of the fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea", Queen Aggravain has ruled that none may marry until her son, Prince Dauntless marries. However, she has managed to sabotage every princess that come along. When Sir Harry and Lady Larken learn that they are going to be parents, wed or not, he goes off to the swamps and brings back Princess Winnifred ("Fred" to her friends). The queen is horrified and immediately begins to scheme, but Winnifred, with some help from Sir Harry, the King, and the Jester, isn't going to be quite so easy to get rid of. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors/students. SSC faculty, staff and students are entitled to two free tickets with advance reservation. Call (708) 210-5741 for reservations or information.

Choral Concert at St. Joseph Catholic Church
Come and hear the 90-voice South Suburban Chorale under the direction of Albert M. Jackson, as they pay tribute to the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn with a performance of the mighty "Hymn of Praise." The performance features the Chorale, full orchestra, and soloists, and takes place on Sunday, May 3rd at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17951 Dixie Highway, Homewood. The SSC Voices, under the direction of Albert Jackson, the Jazz Combo and Jazz Band 2, both under the direction of Fred Miller, the Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Glenn Ellison and the Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Andy Hoefle, play a variety of jazz and progressive music. No charge for admission. Donations accepted for the SSC music scholarship fund.
