Welcome to the new South Suburban College Faculty Association Web Site. This site is the result of a lot of hard work by Steve Springer, Recording Secretary Commodore Craft, and others. Our site is an attempt to improve communication among members as well as to provide a forum for discussion of issues relating to education, unionism, and other topics of concern and interest to members of the Association. Please visit the SSCFA web site regularly to keep abreast of developments that effect us all. Consider writing an article to appear in this space.

As my first term as President draws to a close, I am happy to report that the state of the Association is good. Your negotiating team did a fine job on your behalf. Our new four-year contract, which has been thoroughly proofread by the team, as well as by the negotiations committee chaired by Karen Simac, appears on this site and is in the process of being signed. Of course, a printed version will still be distributed to each member. The re-organization instituted by President George Dammer is slowly but surely taking place and many of us are getting acquainted with administrators new to our areas and searching for new Associate Deans. Faculty involvement in the 75th Anniversary Open House was tremendous. The presentations were great and we made a good impression on the many hundreds of visitors who attended. How could any high school senior who attended the event not want to enroll at SSC after seeing the wonderful programs and the excellent faculty that we have to offer? The Open House is a good example of the things we can achieve by working together with the support staff and the administration toward a common goal. One of my goals when I was elected two years ago was to foster a non-adversarial, trusting relationship with the administration and the Board of Trustees. We have had some differences, but we have been able to work together to increase enrollment, move our educational agenda forward, and continue to provide the best services possible for our students.

As new Association officers and Executive Board members prepare to take office in June, the Association is strong and remains a viable force for the improvement of working conditions and our quality of life. This May, the Association will lose more of its most active members to retirement, including officers Commodore Craft, Dennis Dryzga and Carol McCarthy. Newcomers to the Board, David Anderson and Pam Daniel, will have some large shoes to fill. I know they will be up to the task. The "young money-grubbing Turks" have gradually become the "Old Guard" and need to be constantly challenged by newer and more energetic members.

Please visit your web site often for exciting news and views and feel free to respond to my humble ravings by email.
