MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT FOR EACH EXAM

To generate "classroom discussions" I am requiring each of you to complete a MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT on the Bulletin Board for each Exam. You should note that I deem these assignments as the equivalent of "class participation" in an off-line class and believe they are a necessary component in delivering this course to you on-line.

Therefore, for each Exam, you must post a MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT to the Bulletin Board no later than the opening date for the exam itself. If you fail to comply with this assignment, I will deduct 10 points from your exam score.

Moreover, you have up to and including the deadline for each Exam to post your responses to other classmates MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT postings. I will be following your responses and awarding extra credit (up to 10 points) on your Exam score depending on how significant your

responses to other MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT postings are and

the depth of your legal analysis.

Here is the MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT for each exam:

To prevent duplication on the Bulletin Board, I would like you to choose any legal issue from the assigned material for the Exam and post a significant legal analysis/discussion of that issue (you must include examples with your original posting). The only caveat is that you may not choose an issue that has already been chosen/posted by one of your classmates (make sure

you continually review the Bulletin Board to ensure that you do not duplicate another persons posting). Obviously, earlier postings have the advantage of greater choice among the material covered on the next exam but there is more than enough material to enable you to make a unique and timely posting.

FAIR WARNING! If you do not post your MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT on time or you duplicate another classmates posting, I will deduct 10 points from your exam score.

ALSO, YOU MUST COMPLY WITH THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE

(INCLUDING YOUR NAME IN THE SUBJECT LINE):

When you are posting your original MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT, click on "Compose Discussion Message" on the Bulletin Board page and in the Subject Line put the following:

MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT FOR EXAM ___ -- YOUR NAME

(You would fill-in the blank with the applicable exam number)

Thereafter, fill-in the Message area (NO ATTACHMENTS) with your legal analysis/discussion and post it to the Bulletin Board.

When responding to other classmate original MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT postings, simply click on "Reply" and then post your response.

By following the above, a thread will be created for each of you with both your original posting and classmates responses (and your reply to those

responses).

This will make it easier to follow on the Bulletin Board and easier for me to grade.

FAIR WARNING! You must follow the above procedure or I will treat your posting as if you did not compete the assignment (and deduct 10 points from your exam score).

Additionally, I will be awarding extra credit (up to 10 points on each exam) to those of you who discuss (on the Bulletin Board) relevant legal material

covered on the applicable exam. In particular, I will be looking for your response to your classmates MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT postings.

Therefore, make sure you discuss the material and cases from the material covered on the applicable exam and the MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT postings put up by your classmates. I will not award points for discussions outside the applicable next exam materials.

Also, for both your MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT and extra credit postings, I am looking for your personal analysis and discussions. Simply posting materials that appear on other web pages or in the text is not enough. In fact, if you post materials that you have found in other places, please identify those materials and web locations. Thereafter, I would like to see your analysis or discussion regarding those materials.

I strongly suggest you all post your MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT in a timely manner (by doing so, you will not lose 10 points on the applicable Exam). Moreover, I suggest you get active on the Bulletin Board as the potential extra credit points can move you a letter grade on the exam!

In the past, students who have posted their MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT on time and have been very active on the Bulletin Board have been awarded an additional 10 points per exam and moved up a letter grade for the course.

On the other hand, students who did not post a significant MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT on time had 10 points deducted from the applicable exam score. Moreover, because of their inactivity on the Bulletin Board, they did not earn any extra credit points and their overall course grade really suffered.

Therefore, make sure you post each MANDATORY ASSIGNMENT on time and get active on the Bulletin Board.

Good Luck!
