Spring, 2008   Mr. Kulycky

Please Note:  All work has to be handed in at 14-point font size, preferably in Times New Roman font.

No Cell Phones can be turned on in class.  No one is permitted to step out of class to answer a phone-call activated because the phone has been set to “vibrate.” If a student is concerned about problems at home, the caretaker at home should call Campus Police at 1-708-596-2000, Extension 2235, and an officer will come to class with any information for that student.

Overview:

In English 102 we will follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) guidelines in formatting our essays and research paper.  We will write three expository compositions of a minimum of two typed pages each.  Every paper will be developed on the basis of a group of readings from our Literature text.  The readings are chosen to reflect a specific theme which will be developed in class.  Once the paper is handed in, it will be corrected by the teacher and returned to the student.  The student will then re-write the paper and hand this rewrite as well as the original corrected version back to the teacher for a grade.  An incoming impromptu essay and final essay are also required.

A research paper of from seven- to twelve-typewritten pages (excluding the title page, outline page or pages, and the "Works Cited" page or pages) will be due on Wednesday, April 13th.  The thesis of the research paper will be chosen from the list below:

(1) The USA must do something to reduce obesity in the population.

(2) Parents should not trust the schools to teach their children the three r's.

(3) Single-parenthood is a bad idea.

(4) Americans pay too much attention to "looks" and not enough attention to character..

(5) Global warming threatens life on Planet Earth.

(6) Too many Americans watch too much television.

A minimum of six in-text citations from six different sources (excluding reference works such as encyclopedias or almanacs) is also required.  These six or more sources will then all be included in the "Works Cited" at the end of the paper.  The sources must include at least one book and at least two articles from the South Suburban College Library Services, such as EBSCO Publishing or OCLC First Search.  At least two rough drafts as well as all saved files of researched articles and any printed articles are to be handed in with the final copy of the research paper.  I will copy the contents from each student's research-paper disk(s) or e-mail attachments to my hard drive.
