Music Scholarships and Grants

General Information

South Suburban College offers several scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of talent, academic standing or a combination of both. Awards are generally given in the following hierarchy (this does not infer past practice):

1. Full Time Music Major as students

2. Full Time Students

3. Part-Time Students

4. Community Members


J. Albert Kindig Memorial Scholarship

A yearly scholarship in memory of the late Dr. J. Albert Kindig, the first Director of the Department of Arts and Humanities, is awarded to an outstanding full-time art, drama, or music student with a 3.0 GPA or better. Scholarship applicants must be recommended by a faculty member in art, music or drama and submit an application with a 300 word essay to the Associate Dean of Arts and Humanities. Finalists will submit work and have a personal interview.


Talent Grant Scholarships

Requirements
♦ Must be enrolled as an applied major prior to the audition. (Voice, Instrumental or Composition)
♦ Must be a declared music major.

Eligibility limits:
♦ Students are eligible for this scholarship once per academic year.

How do I apply?
♦ Fill out an application form (available in the Music Department office (1101).
♦ Sign up for an audition time.
♦ Be registered for at least 12 hours.
♦ Be registered for an applied major (see any full-time faculty member for further assistance).

What should I bring to the audition?
♦ Dress appropriately.
♦ Bring 3 copies of the solo(s) you will be performing OR bring 3 copies of your original composition(s) that have never been performed.
♦ Be on time
Composition Majors must provide thier own performers.

Do I need an accompanist?
♦ We will provide an accompanist for the vocal audition; it is your responsibility to pay for rehearsal time ($10 per half hour). If you have questions contact the music department.

What will I be expected to perform?
♦ Perform 2 contrasting selections.
♦ Major Scales (instrumental only)
♦ Sight Reading for instrumentalists and Sight Singing for composition and vocal majors.
♦ Composition Majors and performers will perform thier original works.

How much are the awards worth?
♦ The amounts vary from semester to semester and based upon available funding and the number of applicants.
♦ Scholarships are awarded only as reimbursement of private lesson costs. Those already receiving full financial aid are only eligible for reimbursement of other music costs (e.g. supplies, lesson books, solos, etc).


Jack Wonnell Memorial Scholarship

Jack Wonnell, former Band Director at Thornton Fractional North and South, passed away in December of 2001. He was a long time member of the South Holland Municipal band and the South Suburburban College Symphonic band. This scholarship was established to celebrate his life and his contributions to the music education industry.

Requirements:
♦ Must be enrolled as Music Major at South Suburban College.
♦ Must be a member of the South Suburban College Symphonic Band.

Eligibility limits:
♦ This scholarship is awarded in the fall of each academic year. Students may be eligible for a second year but must re-apply and re-audition.

♦ Fill out an application form (available in the Music Department office (1101).
♦ Contact the Band Director to set up an audition time.
♦ Be registered for at least 12 hours.

What should I bring to the audition?
♦ Dress appropriately.
♦ Bring 3 copies of the solo(s) you will be performing OR bring 3 copies of your original composition(s) that have never been performed.
♦ Be on time

Dean Sayre Music Scholarship
New for 2003 - 2004 school year

Established in the memory of Dean Sayre, former Band Director, private teacher and music business owner from the south suburban area. He was a long time member of the South Suburburban College Jazz Orchestra (formerly known as the seven O'clock band). This scholarship was established to celebrate his life and his dedication to the music industry.

Requirements:
♦ Must be enrolled as Music Major at South Suburban College.
♦ Must be a member of the South Suburban College Jazz Ensemble or Jazz Orchestra.

Eligibility limits:
♦ This scholarship is awarded in the fall of each academic year. Students may be eligible for a second year but must re-apply and re-audition.

How Do I Apply?
♦ Fill out an application form (available in the Music Department office (1101).
♦ Contact the Band Director to set up an audition time.
♦ Be registered for at least 12 hours.

What should I bring to the audition?
♦ Dress appropriately.
♦ Bring 3 copies of the solo(s) you will be performing OR bring 3 copies of your original composition(s) that have never been performed.
♦ Be on time

Do I need an accompanist?
♦ No. You may bring one but the department will not provide one for you.

What will I be expected to perform?
♦ Perform 2 contrasting selections.
♦ Major Scales (instrumental only).
♦ Improvisation on a 12 bar standard blues.
♦ Sight Reading.

How much are the awards worth?
♦ The amounts vary from year to year and are based upon available funding and the number of applicants.
♦ Those already receiving full financial aid are only eligible for reimbursement of other music costs (e.g. supplies, lesson books, solos, etc). See the Music Department Chair for more information.


Instrumental Scholarships

Requirements:
♦ Must be enrolled in an instrumental ensemble.

Eligibility limits:
♦ Scholarship will be awarded once per academic year (usually in the spring semester).

How Do I Apply?
See the instrumental music director for application procedures.
♦ Be registered for at least 6 hours.

How much are the awards worth?
♦ The amounts vary from year to year and are based upon available funding and the number of applicants.
♦ The amounts vary from semester to semester and based upon available funding, past performance, recommendation, number of applicants and instruments needed.

Instrumental scholarships are usually awarded in the spring semester of the academic year based upon the student's ability to grow musically and perform at a high level during the fall semester.

Vocal Scholarships

Requirements:
♦ Must be enrolled in a vocal ensemble.
♦ Must be registered for at least 6 hours.

Eligibility limits:
♦ Scholarship will be awarded once per academic semester.

How Do I Apply?
♦ See the vocal music director for application procedures.

How much are the awards worth?
♦ The amounts vary from semester to semester and based upon available funding, financial need, past performance, recommendation, number of applicants and performers needed. They are usually equivalent to the tuition and/or fees for one ensemble course.
